| Disposition:
8-2-2002: Shay C/N 3092 has been sold by the State of Nevada to the Sierra
Nevada Logging Museum near Arnold, CA in White Pine. She will be restored to
service in Oakdale, CA in the shops of the Sierra Railroad, then operated at
the museum. From Mark Johnson, Sierra Nevada Logging Museum, October 25, 2007 The Sierra Nevada Logging Museum was awarded a historic restoration grant for Shay 3092 from the Department of Transportation and California's CalTrans. The Shay's restoration was proposed as a three-phase project: mechanical restoration, boiler restoration, and interpretive operation. The current grant covers the mechanical restoration of the Shay. Pursuant to the terms of the grant, the boiler was given a thorough ultrasound inspection by the State of California in June 2007 and found to be in good, restorable condition. The mechanical restoration is estimated to be a three-year project. Another year has been allowed for boiler repairs if they haven't been completed in parallel with the mechnical work. This should result in an operating Shay in 2012, although planning for an operating location near the museum is still to be completed. Mr. Chris Allan, owner of Historic Railway Consultants, and Steam Coordinator for the Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola, is planning and coordinating the Shay's restoration work. As of Oct 2007, the museum is awaiting authorization from CalTrans to proceed with the project. |
